What are passkeys?
Passkeys are a new, more secure, and easier way to log in to websites and apps without using passwords. They are digital credentials stored on your device (such as a phone, computer, or security key) and linked to your account with a specific website or service. Passkeys are based on public-key cryptography, a proven security method.
They are phishing-resistant, meaning they cannot be easily stolen or reused like passwords, and greatly reduce the risk of account takeover through social engineering.
Creating passkeys
When activating an account, you will be asked to create your first, default passkey.
After logging in, you can create additional passkeys. To do so:
Click on your profile icon in the top-right corner.
Select Profile Settings
Go to the Security section
In the Passkeys section, click the Add new button.
On mobile: go to Profile > Security > Passkeys and tap + to add a new passkey.
If you signed in to the mobile app by scanning a QR code, the app will offer to add a passkey stored on that device right after you log in — this lets you sign in directly next time.
Storing passkeys
There are several options for where you can store passkeys:
In a password manager
In your browser
On a physical security key like Yubikey
On your device
If you store a passkey in a modern password manager, it will usually sync across all your devices. For example, if you create a passkey in iCloud Keychain on your iPhone, you can use it on your macOS or iPadOS devices.
If you use the Bron desktop app on Mac or Windows, the app will offer to create a passkey in Apple Passwords (Touch ID) or Windows Hello after you sign in. Next time, you can sign in to the app directly, without opening the browser. Your existing passkeys will still work.
If you need to log in from another device, you can select Scan QR code and complete the sign-in process using your phone.
It is strongly recommended to store multiple passkeys in different trusted password managers for backup.
Restrictions
Microsoft Authenticator
Microsoft Authenticator only supports passkeys for Microsoft accounts and apps.
You cannot save a Bron passkey to Microsoft Authenticator.
Instead, store your Bron passkey in iCloud Keychain, another password manager, your device’s internal storage, Google Password Manager, or another secure location.
Dashlane
Dashlane currently has limited support for passkeys.
When using the browser extension, passkeys work as expected.
However, system-wide auto-fill on macOS has a bug that prevents new passkeys from being created.
This issue must be resolved by the Dashlane team, and there is no workaround available at this time.
⚠️ If you store your passkeys in a cloud-synced password manager such as Apple Passwords (iCloud Keychain) or Google Password Manager, the security of your Bron passkey depends on the security of your Apple or Google account. Passkeys sync across all devices signed in to that account — if it is taken over, your synced Bron passkey is compromised too. Protect that account with strong two-factor authentication, use a strong unique password, and review its recovery settings.
Lost all your passkeys?
You can regain access through Account Recovery — you'll verify your identity and create a new passkey. Before starting recovery, Bron will show you where your existing passkeys are saved, so you can check those places first.
